Anxiety is a psychological and physiological state characterized by cognitive, somatic, emotional, and behavioral components. These components combine to create an unpleasant feeling that is typically associated with uneasiness, fear, or worry. Anxiety is a generalized mood condition that occurs without an identifiable triggering stimulus. As such, it is distinguished from fear, which occurs in the presence of an observed threat. Additionally, fear is related to the specific behaviors of escape and avoidance, whereas anxiety is the result of threats that are perceived to be uncontrollable or unavoidable.

Another view is that anxiety is "a future-oriented mood state in which one is ready or prepared to attempt to cope with upcoming negative events" suggesting that it is a distinction between future vs. present dangers that divides anxiety and fear. Anxiety is considered to be a normal reaction to stress. It may help a person to deal with a difficult situation, for example at work or at school, by prompting one to cope with it. When anxiety becomes excessive, it may fall under the classification of an anxiety disorder.

What are good meds that treat anxiety and not depression?
Q. I have VERY bad anxiety. To a point where going out of the house is impossible. I have to self talk myself before I go out if that doesn't work I leave it in the hands of God. If I am depressed I am only depressed because I can't control my anxiety. What is a good drug that treats anxiety and not depression?

A. Ativan and xanax are antianxiolytics, but are extremely addictive. They work very well to quell anxiety but you build a tolerance that requires a higher dose in a very short period of time. Any good doctor will only prescribe these meds for short term use and will suggest you get some counselling help to learn how to control your anxiety. Long term that's your best bet...it seems if you are self talking already, that's a start. The antidepressant paxil is good for social anxiety and might be what you need. It's not addictive and I've seen it make a huge difference in a few of my friends lives who were becoming rather reclusive because of post menopausal anxiety. Best of luck to you.

For instance if ive not seen a member of my family for a long time i get an adrenalin rush when i see them again, but i hate it, i should be happy about seeing them but the adrenalin rush or anxiety makes me negative about seeing them

What does a person do that has severe anxiety and social phobia?
Q. I have many physical symptoms. They worsen when I go to places like the grocery store. My vision gets weird and I feel like I can't focus. I have a past history of alcohol problems. I have been sober for about 2 yrs. I don't know what to do anymore though because I haven't ever had a real job, I dropped out of college, and I have tried anti-depressants and they didn't work for me even at high doses. I have also gone to therapy and read an anxiety work book. I feel very hopeless. Can anyone recommend something I could try that might help it. I used to just try and hide my anxiety. It is to the point where if I am out with a friend they notice and ask if I am ok. I am not a violent person. I am a wife and mother of two children. What… [cont.]

A. Sounds to me like you could have a case of depersonalization/dereali zation. It's a very common disorder that is caused by anxiety. You may have developed it when you quit drinking. I have suffered from it for close to six months because of an anxiety attack from a bad trip. It has slowly gotten better and better, and is pretty close to being gone for me. The best thing you can do is to keep yourself calm when faced with a bad situation. It will take a lot of time unfortunately, but will eventually go away as long as you don't let your anxiety control you. Here is a link to a forum that will help you understand and cope with the disorder so you can get rid of it.

Anxiety is a physiological state characterized by cognitive, somatic, emotional, and behavioral components (Seligman, Walker & Rosenhan, 2001). These components combine to create the feelings that we typically recognize as fear, apprehension, or worry. Anxiety is often accompanied by physical sensations such as heart palpitations, nausea, chest pain, shortness of breath, stomach aches, or headache. The cognitive component entails expectation of a diffuse and certain danger.

  • Almost all men are over-anxious. No sooner do they enter the world than they lose that taste for natural and simple pleasures so remarkable in early life. Every hour do they ask themselves what progress they have made in the pursuit of wealth or honor; and on they go as their fathers went before them, till, weary and sick at heart, they look back with a sigh of regret to the golden time of their childhood.
